The father of one of the families at the centre of a controversy over living conditions facing two refugee families in Longford has compared the situation to a psychological war.

Two Syrian families in Granard have been highlighting serious issues over a lack of heating and ventilation within the two apartments they've been allocated by Longford County Council.

One pregnant resident reportedly spent a night in a car outside the property with the heat on due to fumes and cold in the apartment.

The families were resettled in the north Longford town in 2019 as part of the Irish Refugee Resettlement Programme.

In a statement to Shannonside Northern Sound late last night, Longford County Council confirmed that while they cannot comment on individual cases, they have been in contact with the family in question.

In an emotional written statement today, the father of one of the families say they had escaped the war in Syria and starvation in Lebanon before they were resettled in Ireland.

He says while this is a major problem for his family, it could be easily fixed by those in charge.
