The Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council says while the reputation of town been put in question it remains a safe place to live and work.
Councillor Peggy Nolan made the comments following a violent assault in Longford town on Tuesday afternoon.
The Fine Gael representative says it's heartbreaking to hear about such incidents but insists it's a small minority spoiling the community.
She's highlighting the major investment that has come to the county in recent months and says many companies have decided that Longford is a great place to do business.
Councillor Nolan is hopeful the new Community Safety Partnership can bring change and insists she will be calling on the Justice Minister for reform within the Judicial System.
''There's nearly 41,000 people living in this county. And can I tell you, I'd say there's about 30 that is spoiling the peace and tranquility and the greatness that is within this county.
We know now that the Guards are doing everything they can. And it's the judicial system that needs to be questioned, if legislation needs to be changed. We will work tirelessly with the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee to get that legislation changed.''
