It's been revealed today that Longford council hopes to buy Longford Greyhound Track in the near future.
The property has been on the market since July of last year when it was put up for sale with a guide price of three quarters of a million euro.
The 7.1 acre site close to the town centre is zoned as sporting and recreational and council Cathaoirleach Peggy Nolan told members today that everything is on track for the signing of contracts on the sale by the end of next month.
The vacant land attracted some controversy over the last year with some people expressing fear that the site could be used for commercial development despite its zoning classification.
Widespread welcome for the impending deal was expressed by other members at this afternoons meeting, although Chief Executive Paddy Mahon said it was important to note that the sale hasn't actually happened as yet.
