A Longford council owned building has been put on the market.
'Providers' at the corner of Main Street was bought by the local authority in 2017 with plans made for the development of an innovation and technological hub at the site.
However, Councillor Seamus Butler says the council faced many obstacles; refurbishment works of close to 2 million euro would be needed to bring the space up to standard.
It's understood a decision was made during the Summer to sell the building. However, the Fianna Fail representative claims there's a condition in the sale which states a work hub must be maintained in the building for a period once purchased. The 22,000 sq ft commercial property comprises of a basement, ground floor, 1st floor and 2nd floor area, and Councillor Butler is confident there will be interest in the building.
'We explored every possibility for the building. It was a very difficult decision, but we were getting nowhere with it. And we want to put it on the market. It's now gone on the market. We hope we will have plenty of expressions of interest. It's a fine building in the middle of the town. It does require an awful lot of work but we understand already there is some interest in it. And we hope we can move on. And we can look immediately for alternatives.'
