A Granard Councillor is calling for a relief road to be built around the town to take the bulk of traffic off the streets.
Fianna Fail's PJ Reilly made the call at this week's meeting of the Granard Municipal District when he tabled a motion on the issue.
Councillor Reilly says the amount of traffic travelling through the town has increased over the years and the town is suffering as a result.
He says the land he has in mind for the project is already frozen due to it's proximity to the N4 project between Mullingar and Longford.
The Fianna Fail councillor says the Transport Minister Eamon Ryan reacted favourably when he mentioned a by-pass for the town during a recent visit to the county.
''The traffic going through Granard and the N55 is getting busier every year, on a Monday and Friday the northern people attending Centre Parcs is bringing more traffic through the town, this route is already sterilized, its mapped out, nobody can build on it, so its ready to go.''
