A Roscommon Councillor is calling on the Courts Service to ensure the courthouse in the town centre remains in focus.
In December of last year court proceedings were temporarily moved to the former Fairyland Dance Hall on the Racecourse Road, with a refurbishment cost of €1.1 million
The premises located beside Roscommon Garda Station was deemed inadequate for the advances of the modern world, particularly in terms of accessibility and technology.
At a recent Joint Policing Committee Councillor Kathleen Shanagher asked that the matter be kept on the agenda going forward.
The Independent representative wants renovations on the 1828 historical building to be completed as soon as possible.
''The courthouse in Roscommon is such a fine building in a prominent location, it's accessible to the Garda Station which is just beside it, so it's important the money is spent on it and it's brought up to the required standard, I appreciate it will take time but if they don't start soon the years will go on so I'm asking now the Courts Service to show us in the Council and the people of Roscommon what the works will be and when will that start.''
