A property earmarked by Longford County Council for social housing has been acquired for the housing of asylum seekers according to a local Councillor.
Gerry Warnock claims negotiations were at an advanced stage for the local authority to acquire the property in the town.
They've now ceased as the Department of Integration is set to house 69 international protection applicants at the property according to Longford MD representatives.
They've raised concerns of the availability of services and amenities for those arriving in the town.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Councillor Warnock says vulnerable people are being pitted against each other:
'Longford County Council were engaging with this landowner and it got to the stage where it got to the department, it was at a very advanced stage, where the council were going to procure this building to try and hit some of their 2023 social housing targets.
I suppose the issue with IP is that it makes commercial sense for people.
What's happening here is there's one group of people in need being pitted against another group of people in need and its making the situation very very difficult.'
