Shots were fired through the downstairs window of a house in Springlawn shortly before 8 o'clock.

A Fianna Fáil councillor says he fears tit-for-tat violence in Longford town after a shooting last night.

Shots were fired through the downstairs window of a house in Springlawn shortly before 8 o'clock.

A man in his 70s was shot in the arm and is being treated in Mullingar Hospital, for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Councillor Seamus Butler, the cathaoirleach of Longford Municipal District, has described it as 'attempted murder'.
