Local councillors have agreed to formally recognise a Roscommon woman for her significant contribution to the formation of the state. Scramogue native, Dr Brigid Lyons, was a member of Cumann na mBan and became the first and only female officer in the Irish Free State Army.
She was also a medical doctor, who tended to wounded soldiers during the Easter Rising, and would later play a leading role in the fight against tuberculosis. Speaking to Shannonside News, Independent councillor Tom Crosby, who tabled the recent motion, said a monument could be constructed at Dr Lyons former home:
