Longford Councillors have called on Permanent TSB to restore banking services in Granard by opening a new branch in the town.
People in and around the North Longford town were left without a full banking service in 2021 following the withdrawal of the Bank of Ireland from 88 locations nationwide, including Granard and 5 other locations in the Shannonside region.
An agreement was reached at the time to transfer some services to the local post office, with the Granard Credit Union also facilitating the installation of an outdoor ATM in the town to regain access to 24 hour cash services.
At the January meeting of the Granard Municipal District, Local councillor PJ Reilly called for the local authority to write to Permanent TSB and urge them to consider opening a branch in the town.
Councillor Reilly says the international banking chain has already restored banking services in neighbouring counties affected by the withdrawal of Bank of Ireland.
''This has happened on two occasions where they've opened new premises in County Cavan and given a good service where Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank are gone out of the areas and Permanent TSB has taken up the slack and opened a branch.''
