Athlone Library will remain open in the face of a planned protest at the service today.
A group targeting LGBTQ+ books stocked in the library's across the country announced plans to attend the Town this morning
Westmeath County Council Health & Safety unit have stated that the Library will remain open as long as it is safe for staff and members of the public.
The group are understood to be travelling via boat, with protests held in Galway and Offaly over the last 24 hours.
Councillor Louise Heavin says the protest does not represent the views of the people of Athlone:
Athlone hung our first pride flags up last month and we got the full support of all the Councillors.
We are a town that is progressive and is democratic. We have the support of the people of the town.
I'm just disappointed that people feel the need to visit our town and protest at the library, a really safe space for many in our community
