The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management says it's liaising with local authorities to prepare for a severe weather response if necessary.

Met Eireann says there is a potential for a significant snow event next week.

The NDFEM and the national forecaster briefed local authorities this morning.

A cold front from Siberia will move in from the east and meet with a low-pressure system resulting in snow.

Temperatures are set to drop from this weekend and could reach as low as minus 3 next week.

Aoife Keely from Met Eireann says there's a potential for a Beast from the East style snow storm.

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management says its liaising with local authorities to prepare for a severe weather response if necessary.

It says the relevant government departments are making contingency plans.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow weather says it's too soon to tell how severe the snow will be.

Met Eireann says tomorrow will be cold with temperatures between 2 to 5 degrees, Sunday will be even colder with while next week will be bitterly cold and wintry.
