County Development plans set out a framework for sustainable development in the county while considering the protection of the natural and built environment.

Longford County Council has approved its County Development plan for the next six years - including the rezoning of parcels of land in Ardagh.

A total of 68 submissions on the draft plan were received by the Council -of which 40% related to the plans for the historical village.

Concerned locals had staged a campaign to oppose plans to rezone Ardagh House and two gate lodges to residential as well as creating a non-zoned area and re-designating areas within the demesne from tourism to recreational

A Council official claimed that the local was hoping to keep the village 'safe from insensitive development and the plan was approved with unanimous support.

Councillor Colm Murray Mick Cahill and Paul Ross and also secured support for special motions relating to the Ardagh village area, relating to its built and viewing heritage.
