A man in his 50s was arrested in the midlands this morning and is being held in Longford Garda Station.

The former Longford councillor and mayor was jailed yesterday for three years and three months for laundering over €2.6 million.

In the Roscommon/Longford division, there were 47 incidents of rape as well as 12 other sexual offences recorded in 2023.

Since 1996, the bureau has seized over €174 million in taxes and €6.5 million in social protection recoveries.

Rape was excluded from the new directive on combating violence against women, after EU states failed to agree on a definition of the term.

Violent disorder, intoxication in a public place, assault with intention to cause bodily harm and trespass are some of the offences that fall in the category of public order.

The local authority is currently in the process of adding a further 11 cameras to the network at different locations around the town.

Over €10,000 in total was taken from victims in just three incidents.
