A former Leitrim resident believes a module on respect for the road and its users should be added to the school curriculum.
Emer, who was recently cycling in Carrick-On-Shannon says she narrowly escaped hospitalisation following an incident with an SUV at an intersection close to Main Street.
Emer claims, despite wearing high visibility clothing the vehicle nearly hit her as she crossed at the junction.
The local cyclists believes local authorities and the Gardai must take further action to support those on bikes.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show Emer explained the incident.
''It was a really shocking experience actually, I've never come that close to get hospitalized by an SUV. If you've not learned to use the road, it should be included in the school's curriculum. I always appreciate when young people learned this proficiency on the bike, then you've learned to use the roads.''
