The extension of the natural gas pipeline from Ballymahon onto Longford town and Edgeworthstown has been raised in the Dail this week by Longford TD Joe Flaherty.
The Fianna Fail TD told the house that the extension of the pipeline would go some way towards making up for the impact of the closure of Bord Na Mona works and the early cessation of the peat harvesting on the bogs.
Deputy Flaherty said the extension of the pipeline would bring natural gas to 10 major industrial units in Longford and Edgeworthstown with a total of almost 3,000 people employed there.
While the TD was told that the issue is a matter for Gas Networks Ireland and Ministers can have no direct function in decision making, he said a proposal from Longford Council seeking funding under the Climate Change Action Plan should be supported…
