The Tanaiste has been called on to ensure big data centres have their power cut off, and not householders.
Mayo TD Michael Ring made the call, after Leo Varadkar said the likelyhood of blackouts 'can't be ruled out' but is 'highly unlikely.'
The Tanaiste says electricity supply to data centres will be turned off before blackouts are allowed in Ireland during the cold spell.
Deputy Ring says he isn't reassured by Leo Varadkar's comments:
Well look it, he hasn't given a 100 percent guarantee
I'd be very disappointed if we have power cuts, we shouldn't have them.
We should be able to produce enough energy for ourselves to be able to keep the electricity on, the central heating on and the lights on for people.
This is not the time of the year that we should be having power cuts.
