A verdict of death by misadventure has been recorded at the inquest of a man killed in a road crash on the N5 last year.
Father of two Daniel Snyed of Ballinamore, Leitrim, died after being struck by a van just outside Strokestown in October 2020.
Roscommon Coroner's court heard that that the 33-year-old was walking on the N5 at around 4.30am in October 2020 when he was struck by a van heading towards Longford.
Prior to the crash he was seen by several motorists with another man walking on the road after the vehicle they were in had run out of fuel.
However, the men subsequently split up on the N5 minutes before the fatal crash.
The inquest heard a man driving a VW Caddy van heading towards Longford struck the Dublin native walking towards Strokestown just after 4.30am.
He claimed he hadn't seen anyone in the moments before the crash and was trying to drive close to the central line.
He immediately stopped his vehicle and began a search after the impact, but it was another motorist who stopped to assist that discovered the body of Mr Sneyd below a wall in field.
A post mortem showed the Tallaght native had a blood alcohol level of 185 microgrammes percentage, suffered multiple significant traumatic injuries and would have died instantly.
The coroner returned a verdict of death by misadventure and claimed Mr Sneyd had behaved in a "dangerous manner" on the road in the minutes before his death.
Sympathies were expressed to his family and that of the van driver.
