There's been a decrease in the number of penalty points issued in the Shannonside region in the last year.
According to figures from the Central Statistics Office, Leitrim Gardaí also issued the least amount of penalty points nationally in 2021.
Figures from the CSO released earlier this week show an overall decrease in the amount of penalty points issued in the Shannonside region in 2021 compared to 2020. Roscommon Gardaí issued the most points last year at 7,294, down on the 2020 figure of 8,310. Motorists in Longford were issued with 5,174 points last year, down 18% on the year previous. Leitrim Gardaí handed out the least amount of penalty points in the country at 3,112 in 2021, a decrease from the previous year's figure of 3,502. The top three offences nationally resulting in penalty points were speeding, driving using a mobile phone, and driving without reasonable consideration.
There's been a 14% reduction in the amount of penalty points issued across the country between 2020 and 2021.
