Longford Gardaí are working with specialist search units and the Irish Defence Forces following a major security incident in the town yesterday.
Staff and customers at the Longford Shopping Centre and Dunnes Stores on the Dublin Road were forced to leave the centres with immediate effect just before 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
According to Gardaí, they were made aware of a security concern facing both properties following phone call to the businesses.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news at the scene, a ranking Gardai stated they are acting in the interest of public safety.
Gardaí remained at the scene overnight, with a spokesperson confirming that the businesses will be reopened be soon as they are deemed safe.
