The delay in appointing a project design team to construct a purpose Model 4 hospital for cancer treatment in the west is costing lives.
That's the view of Professor Michael Kerin, Director of the Saolta-University of Galway Cancer Network - who says such a centre was promised under the National Development Plan for 2021 to 2030, but is currently stalled. The west and north-west of Ireland have the highest incidence and mortality rates of cancer in the country.Professor Kerin says, once again, central government is ignoring the west - and it's costing lives. In the west of Ireland we have the highest incidence of cancer, and the poorest outcome for the country.
'We have an ageing hospital that's our cancer centre , and the cancer centre for our region is on the National Development Plan. We're calling on the government to put a project team in behind it now and deliver it in a time frame that will make a real difference.'
