The Department of Integration says it will cease refugee accommodation at Donamon Castle early next year. A Department spokesperson confirmed it would begin the process of relocating the 26 Ukrainian refugees currently housed at the former Cuisle Holiday Centre. It follows a recent public meeting which heard opposition to Department proposals for an extension of refugee accommodation services at the facility. The current arrangement with the Divine Word Missionaries will come to an end when the accommodation contract ends in March.
Cuisle, which was run by the Irish Wheelchair Association, closed in 2019 and a local councillor has called for it to be reopened. Speaking to Shannonside News, Cllr Anthony Waldron appealed to Minister Heather Humphreys for support:
