A massive purpose built derelict shopping centre is currently on the market in Longford Town. The purpose built shopping centre was almost complete when the 2008 financial crash occurred, resulting in the project being shelved. The site is currently owned by Omniplex Cinema Group who operate a four screen cinema adjacent to the site. The site, adjacent to the former Connolly Barracks is spread over two floors with close to 7,000 square metres of retail space and features a multi storey car park.
Shannonside FM News understands that the Omniplex Group is currently interested in selling the site, with the price reported to be listed at over 3 million euro. The entire structure has been effectively derelict over the past 16 years, with the Omniplex group purchasing the site from NAMA in 2018 for approximately 1.2 million euro. The Cinema Group had initially planned to relocate the adjacent cinema into the newer structure and increase cinema screens from four to eight screens. Also included in the project were plans to offer more entertainment services and open the bottom floor for letting by restaurants, cafes and coffee shops. Shannonside FM News have contacted the company for a statement on the issue and are awaiting a response.
