No decision has been made on a name for a new local diocese or the location of its cathedral ahead of a planned amalgamation.
It follows six meetings between Church leaders and parishioners to discuss the future merging of Achonry and Elphin dioceses in recent months.
This week, the Bishop of Elphin outlined some of the details that emerged from the well publicised gatherings which were attended by around 500 people.
One of the main talking points from the meetings was the need for women and young people to play a more prominent role in leadership and decision making.
Reference was also made to the possible ordination of women within the Church while lay men were encouraged to become more involved in the running of the Church.
Bishop Kevin Doran says a potential name or administrative centre for the new diocese had not yet been discussed in detail.
He didn't, however, rule out the possibility of the new diocese having two 'co-cathedrals' as is the case in some other joint dioceses.
Following the meetings, it has been agreed that both Elphin and Achonry would join together for pilgrimages to Lourdes and Knock.
The dioceses will also work together on the formation of Parish Pastoral Councils and the appointment of lay Ministers.
It was also agreed to establish a working group, drawn equally from both dioceses, to consider what other actions may be necessary ahead of the merger.
