A local Councillor says changes need to be made to County Development Plans in the region if it is to benefit properly from a major jobs announcement made today.
Dexcom announced this morning that it is building its global manufacturing facility in Athenry - resulting in the creation of 1,000 high tech jobs over the next five years.
Councillor Declan Geraghty who lives on the Roscommon Galway border says while the news is a major boost for the area, he is concerned about attracting the necessary workforce.
Speaking on the Lets Talk show this afternoon the Independent Councillor says that County Development plans in surrounding counties are very strict on planning for rural housing, and that means that some people will be put off living in Roscommon and other areas:
You know this brings in to question the validity of county development plans when announcements like this are made.
You're going to need housing and the long and the short of it is in the area that this all is confirmed for, that there is a shortage in the workforce for a lot of companies.
The way you're going to attract people to move here is that you're going to have to provide housing and this is why it brings up the question of county development plans and housing.
