Gardai have confirmed the device found in the garden of a home in Granard on Thursday was viable.
The Army's Explosive Ordanace Disposal Unit, based at Custume Barracks, was called to the scene at Tromra road after Gardai were alerted about a suspicious device.
They removed the device, which is believed to resemble a pipe-bomb for further examination.
It has since been confirmed that the cylindrical object, was packed with a variety of objects, and was a viable explosive.
Detectives are examining CCTV footage from the town and housing estate as part of their investigations into the device to try and identify a suspect.
