The Director of Schools with Galway Roscommon ETB fears energy costs will continue to rise in the coming months.
Tomás Mac Pháidín says he expects light and heat expenses will have doubled for 2022 reaching almost 1.1 million euro for the 22 educational facilities.
While Tomas welcomed additional funding that was given to schools for these costs last year, he says they only went so far and were once off.
He says schools are already struggling without the addition of higher energy bills.
"The collective light and heat costs would have been around €610,000 in 2021 and we noticed by October 2022 we were already up around €950,000. Schools are struggling to make ends meet, as are families, and remember many, many schools would have been relying on voluntary family contributions and we would not want schools to be funded in an indirect way".
