A Roscommon native who's also CEO of a refugee and migrant rights organisation is calling on politicians to be careful in the language they use about asylum seekers or refugees.
John Lannon, who's Chief Executive of Doras, says politicians, commentators and other people who have influence have a serious duty not to confuse or increase people's concerns.
He says references by politicians and others to people arriving illegally only plays into the discourse of the far right.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show today the Doras CEO says seeking asylum is a fundamental right and everyone who does it is by definition lawfully resident in our state.
'We seen main stream politicians thrown in words like people coming to Ireland illegally are needing to have a hard line on the application process for international protection and that's quite worrying .
Seeking asylum is a fundamental right everybody has the entitlement to do so the public isn't in a position to make a judgement on peoples applications and by calling into question people's right to be here it s a risk of amplifying or giving more air to the appalling stuff that we see outside some centers.'
