A new 4 million euro apprenticeship facility has been opened at TUS Athlone by Minister Simon Harris.
The state of the art centre will create capacity for up to 1000 apprentices a year, almost doubling its current offering.
The expansion allows for an increase in the type and number of apprenticeship programmes at the local university which includes electrical apprenticeships for the first time in the midlands.
It will also offer consortium led apprenticeships which looks at sectors like Insurance and Technology.
TUS President Professor Vincent Cunnane says students can go onto PhD level through the newly launched programmes.
