Irish Rail is urging drivers to exercise particular caution at level crossings in the Shannonside region.
The appeal comes after the organisation has confirmed drivers going through the level crossing at Knockroghery between 8 and 10 this morning had a very positive response to a special safety event there.
The information and awareness event at the crossing involved members of staff from the rail company, as well as the Road Safety Authority, county council, and gardaí.
Communications Executive with Irish Rail Jane Cregan says the level crossing at Knockroghery is one of a number across the country which has seen a surge in incidents so far this year.
She says this morning's event was aimed at commercial road users, informing and educating them about acting safely at the crossings.
