An Bord Pleanala has granted permission for a controversial housing development in Ballymahon.

Beacon Assets Limited has been given the green light for the development of 37 homes at Dun Aras and Marian Villas.

Residents had opposed Longford County Council's decision earlier this year to grant conditional approval which was the third time it had gone through the planning process following a series of objections by residents living on the existing estate.

Their main concern centres around safety in the area and the development of a pedestrian footpath and cycling track.

Sean Clancy from the local residents association says they will be considering their options but will be putting pressure on the local authority to ensure safe access is provided:
