A €6 million school building in Ballaghaderreen is being prioritised by the Department of Education - and could open in 2026.
It's to cater for a 35 per cent increase in pupil numbers in St Attracta's National School over the past seven years.
Children from 23 different countries, including Afghanistan and Ukraine, are attending the school.
The school has divided several classrooms in two, with partition walls, to accommodate the rising numbers.
Principal Noel Loftus says he received positive news on a planned school extension this week.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education said: "St Attracta’s National School, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon applied for funding for the provision of additional school accommodation to the Department of Education based on projected increased enrolments and was approved a project for the provision of seven general mainstream classrooms and a two special education needs base under the Department's Additional School Accommodation scheme.
"The original approval provided in 2020 was increased based on subsequent higher projected enrolments from the school authority.
"The project was devolved to the school authority for delivery and it appointed a design team to progress the project through the various stages of architectural design and construction. The Department is currently awaiting the submission of the post planning architectural (stage 2b) report from the school authority.
"Upon receipt of this, the Department will review the report from both a technical and cost perspective including how best to address the school's requirements for temporary accommodation during the construction stage of the project.
"The Department is and will continue to engage directly with the school authority to provide practical assistance and advice on progressing on this important project."
