This year's National Famine Commemoration will take place in Edgeworthstown in Longford on Sunday, May 19th.
Culture Minister Catherine Martin says the event gives communities a chance to "gather and pay their respects to the people of our nation who faced hardship and suffering."
The Great Famine claimed the lives of a million people between 1845 and 1852, and was brought on by a potato blight.
Speaking last week, Minister Martin explained that the town was founded by the Edgeworth family, which was involved in many charitable efforts to provide assistance to their locality during the aftermath of the famine.
It is the first time the State Commemoration has taken place in Co. Longford, and will include military honours and a wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of all those who suffered or perished.
