Residents and landowners living near Keeldra Lake in Leitrim are being asked to do their bit in an effort to resolve the algal bloom problem there.
The lake in the Cloone/Mohill area is the only designated bathing area in the county but people are being warned not to enter the water right now because of toxic algal bloom patches in the water.
The water is also dangerous for animals and dog owners are being warned not to let their pets drink the water or enter the lake.
Marie Mulligan who's Senior Executive Engineer in the Environment Section at Leitrim Council says the lake has had this issue on and off for several months now, and they're investigating to try and find the cause.
In the meantime though she says householders and landowners all have a role to play in trying to stop this happening to their local beauty spot.
