A number of new refuge units will be established in Longford as part of a new agency aimed at tackling domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. The eight family places are expected to be made available by the end of next year and follows the establishment of a new Government agency called Cuan.
Cuan, which becomes operational this month, will be dedicated to tackling violence as well as offering support to survivors. It comes following the passing of legislation in the Dáil last month. The Longford refuge units will be part of the delivery of 98 such places in priority locations nationwide by the end of next year. The Department of Justice has confirmed that engagement is ongoing to identify a lead provider and site in the county.
