It's hoped that electric buses will be on the streets of Athlone before the end of the year.
It's been over 12 months since the National Transport Authority announced that the buses servicing the town would be run by renewable means by the middle of 2022.
Despite external factors including global supply chain issues, it is expected that the first new electric buses are programmed to start arriving in Ireland within the next few weeks ahead of initial pre-delivery quality inspections and testing being undertaken.
The National Transport Authority has confirmed that works to allow for the buses to be charged at its depot in Athlone will begin in the coming weeks with completion expected before the end of 2022.
It is expected once this is complete the new electric buses can be introduced into passenger service.
