A new electric vehicle pilot project is being launched in Carrick on Shannon today to support the Leitrim Community Car scheme.
As part of the initiative ESB has provided Leitrim Volunteer Centre with a new Corsa-e, with Leitrim County Council installing a charging point at The Hive.
ESB is supporting the project for six months to help deliver on transport targets and net zero carbon initiatives.
The pilot will see over 27 volunteers using the new vehicle instead of their own personal car when they bring users on daily trips to appointments and other services.
Laura Cassin co-ordinator of the Leitrim Community Car Scheme says this will help ensure the future of the community car.
'And we are hoping that this EV will help to cut our costs and with the use of the EV then we don't need to have to cover the cost of mileage so it is going to save us so we can keep putting money into the service to keep it going and hopefully expand it so we can help more and more people because unfortunately as we know it is a vital service.'
