Longford County Council has announced the emergency closure of the L1056 between Edgeworthstown and Ballinalee with immediate effect.
The closure is due to the dangerous condition of a bridge in the townlands of Lisameen and Currygrane.
The road will remain closed for the forseeable future.
Traffic travelling from Edgeworthstown to Ballinalee should divert north at the Keelogenasause ESB substation onto the L 1089 and continue on this route to the R194 at Listraghee.
Traffic from Ballinalee to Edgeworthstown should divert along the R194, and traffic from the Drumlish direction towards Edgeworthstown should divert at Doherty's Cross West along the R194 to Longford town and the N4 to Edgeworthstown.
There will be local access as far as the Lisameen/Currygrane bridge.
Longford County Council says further updates will follow over the next few days.
