The latest report from the Environmental Protection Agency on bathing waters has described the quality of Keeldra Lake in Leitrim as excellent.
That's despite an algal bloom warning having been in place for some time on the lake in recent years. Measures have been taken to resolve the issue in the last year including bales of barley straw being floated on the surface of the waters.
The report shows the bathing area at Portnashangan on Lough Owel near Mullingar as being of excellent quality, and Lilliput at Lough Ennell has been classified as having 'good' water quality. The EPA report nationally shows 97% of designated bathing waters meeting or exceeding the minimum standards.
