The Environmental Protection agency is to begin an audit of the Lough Forbes water treatment plant today in an effort to lift a boil water notice for almost half of County Longford.
The notice was issued on November 3rd after a fault at the plant was detected by staff.
Almost 17,500 people including consumers in Longford town, Newtown Forbes, Ballinalee, part of Edgeworthstown, part of Drumlish, part of Killashee and surrounding areas have been unable to drink water form their taps in the last three weeks.
Irish Water confirmed last week that the EPA audit would take place in order to speed up efforts to lift the notice in conjunction with the HSE, Irish water and Longford County Council.
As part of the process to lift the notice, Irish Water and Longford County Council confirmed they are progressing with repairs onsite, flushing of the network and sampling of water supplies.
