Major new laws regulating migration in the EU have been passed. The EU Pact on Migration and Asylum was approved by MEPs this afternoon.
It creates common, EU-wide procedures for dealing with migration - but has faced criticism from those who say it violates asylum seekers' rights and infringes on member states' sovereignty. Independent TD Verona Murphy is calling for it to be voted on in a referendum instead.
