The ex-husband of a Roscommon woman detained in Dubai last month has claimed he is facing homelessness and jail in the middle eastern country. 28-year-old Tori Towey had been charged with attempted suicide and alcohol consumption after escaping an alleged attack by her husband. Her case drew international condemnation, with the leader of Sinn Fein, Mary Lou McDonald, describing the lack of treatment for a victim of domestic abuse by local officials as disgraceful. Her travel ban and criminal charges were dropped by UAE officials following intervention by the Irish Government.
Her ex husband, 23 year old Emmerich Basson has now spoken to the local media in his home country of South Africa, claiming that he is being prevented form leaving the country. In two video interviews with News Nexus Official , the Emirates Airline worker did not mention his wife Tori Towey, but explained that an incident of jaywalking had resulted in his arrest. He claims that following his arrest, he has lost his home and job, leaving him at risk of homelessness which is considered a crime in Dubai.
