A former Roscommon nursing home manager is expressing serious concern about the way HIQA regulation is impacting on the sector.
Alice Wright who has specialised in care of the elderly for the last 30 years says she feels nursing managers are overburdened with unnecessary paper work resulting in less time to do the job of caring for people.
The Belfast woman has been in nursing for almost 50 years and says she welcomed the initial introduction of HIQA in 2007.
She says while she appreciates the regulatory body needs to oversee the sector, it's reporting and practice is far too negative, and ends up demoralising staff and residents.
Alice Wright says the nursing home sector is losing a lot of experienced people and there is a need to look again at how HIQA operates.
