The Chair of the Leitrim Joint Policing Committee hopes the expansion of the town's CCTV system will help emergency services assist at incidents along the River Shannon.
Enda McGloin was commenting following the approval of the second phase of the project at today's meeting of the JPC.
The scheme still has to undergo a number of phases, including approval from the gardaí and funding from the Department.
The extra cameras will be used to provide cover at a number of new public spaces in the town including the boardwalk along the Shannon.
Councillor McGloin hopes cameras can prove particularly helpful in the event of accidents on the river
"The boardwalk is an area sometimes, accidents happen.
One point mentioned at today's meeting was the unfortunate loss of life of someone who went into the water accidentally.
It ended up that they were able to pinpoint that from CCTV where that may have happened and it ensured that the body was recovered in quick time.
Heretofore, if there was other people lost in the past it took up to four days'."
