Extension works at Longford army barracks have been given the green light.
Submissions were made last year, and a decision was expected from county planners by the start of 2024.
The Longford and Westmeath Education and Training Board have been seeking permission to extend their facilities at Connolly Barracks on the Battery Road in Longford Town.
The Barracks were vacated by the 4th Cavalry Squadron in 2009, when the site was closed.
The current approved plans consist of the change of use of the former Defense Forces Gymnasium to educational use and the conversion of the former ration store for the barracks into a canteen and welfare facility.
The upgrade of the ration store will also include a new entrance lobby and welfare toilets.
The application was approved with 12 conditions attached.
One of the conditions requests the preparation of a Heritage Impact Study which should confirm that the identified buildings included
within the premises of Connolly Barracks are not protected structures.
Works are expected to commence as soon as these submissions are received by county planners.
