A senior trade union official is criticising the government over claims they've failed to adequately protect local factory workers during the pandemic.
Siptu manufacturing division organiser Greg Ennis says the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has caused a crisis within the food manufacturing sector both regionally and around the country.
According to the Senior union official, infection control procedures in meat plants and similar industries are not effective in helping curtail outbreaks of the virus, with plants remaining open in many cases despite large onsite outbreaks.
The Divisional Organiser says workers are facing major financial and operational difficulties is isolating or distancing from others should they experience symptoms of Covid-19 or are a close contact of a confirmed case.
