There has been a fall in the number of dogs being surrendered to a local pound since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, Longford County Pound was full to capacity following the end of the pandemic and return of normal life. This year, County Veterinarian Michael King said numbers, while still high, are slowly returning to pre-pandemic levels.
However, he said that while the number of dogs arriving at the pound was levelling off, Longford County Council would still be dealing with around 200 this year. The veterinarian also advised owners to keep dogs inside this Halloween to safeguard them from fireworks and other loud noises.
