The duration of the road closure will depend on how long the water level in the lake remains close to or above the level of the public road

Two families living near Lough Funshinagh have been advised by Roscommon County Council to vacate their homes in the interest of personal safety.

Last Friday evening the local authority made the decision to close the local road L-2005 at Ballagh, Co Roscommon to facilitate the deployment of additional temporary flood protection measures.

In a statement to Shannonside FM News this evening the council say that based on current levels in the lake and predicted rainfall, Roscommon County Council has no option but to close the road.

The duration of the road closure will depend on how long the water level in the lake remains close to or above the level of the public road, with the closure expected to last for at least a number of weeks.

Roscommon County Council along with the OPW have both stated that they remain working toward a long term solution, with a planning application expected to be submitted for the works in the coming months.

Local residents and County Councillor Laurence Fallon says the road closure will have a major impact on people in the area.
