The family and friends of a detective murdered in Roscommon three years ago, have paid tribute to the investigating Gardaí behind the case.
Stephen Silver, of Foxford, Co Mayo was yesterday found guilty of the capital murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Castlerea in 2020.
The 46 year old bike mechanic shot the detective eleven times with his own gun as he tried to arrest him.
Silver admitted shooting the Garda but claimed he was suffering a relapse of a mental disorder at the time and pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.
A jury of 7 men and 5 women found him guilty of capital murder following a 7 week trial at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
Former Garda sergeant and close personal friend of Detective Horkan, John Hynes, told the Joe Finnegan Show that local Gardaí left no stone unturned in the investigation:
"I want to pay credit to the investigation team. They prepared an airtight case to ensure the verdict that we got yesterday was achievable and that it was the one that came through. Everyone of those investigators led by Superintendent Tom Colsh and Detective Inspector John Costello and the sergeant Eric Godfrey and their team did an absolutely wonderful job and each and everyone of them deserve great praise and they should be congratulated"
