The family of the late Detective Garda Colm Horkan have issued a formal statement thanking the community for its support following his death.
As well as acknowledging all those who provided solace in the days after his death on June 17th, the family, pays tribute to all those who were present on that night.
In a message posted by the Horkan family on social media, Colm's dad Marty, brothers Aidan, Brendan, Dermot, Padraig, sister Deirdre and extended family express their sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who offered sympathies and condolences since the sudden and tragic passing of Colm.
They say that the mass cards, calls , texts, letters , emails and messages of support, provided solace and was a great source of comfort in the dark days and weeks since.
The family say they are eternally grateful to An Garda Siochana for the compassion and dignity they displayed to the family and the wonderful send-off they gave to Colm also Mayo Roscommon and Sligo Fire service for providing guards of honour, they say he would have been very proud; that it filled them with emotion and pride, and helped ease the burden of our pain.
A special word of thanks is also extended to his many Garda colleagues who came from far and wide to pay their respects, to Charlestown Sarsfields G.A.A. Club for everything, including the guard of honor, to Mayo GAA and Clubs nationwide for the respect shown.
The family also acknowledges former Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan and the many dignitaries who were in attendance on the day, Commissioner Drew Harris who’s touching words on the day of the funeral gave a glimpse of the way Colm carried himself in his work and executed his duties in a very measured and professional manner.
There is also appreciation for all those who led and participated in the funeral mass.
Finally the Horkan family says a simple thank you to all those present on that fateful night, for all their efforts, and the tenderness and empathy afforded to them at this time will never be forgotten.
Colms memorial months mind will be held in Fr O Hara Park on Sunday Aug 2nd at 2pm.
